“Rain was one of those songs that took well over a year and a half to arrange.  I remember Jon playing the song in church alone on the piano.  It was so powerful.  But as an arranger, I felt we needed some hooks to draw the listener in if we were to play it as a band.  The guitar part for the verses came first, and for a while served as the main hook.  Jon mentioned to me that he liked Incubus’ guitar player (who doesn’t?), and immediately I wrote the intro guitar part with Michael Einziger in mind.  The Steve Miller addition in the bridge ("Feed the children . . . ") was a pleasant surprise that seemed to fit so well because of our conviction for global compassion efforts, and then I love how it leads us into Jon’s soaring vocal bridge.  The end guitar solo was written the night before the live recording as I listened to a playback from the dress rehearsal and knew I still didn’t have the right kind of guitar solo.  I am amazed we found any type of cohesiveness with this song!” - Jared
